An Overview of the European Parliament

The European Parliament (EP) is the directly elected legislative body of the European Union (EU). Established in 1979, it is one of the seven institutions of the EU and plays a vital role in shaping EU policies and ensuring democratic accountability.

Functions and Powers

The EP shares legislative power with the Council of the EU. Together, they adopt laws that govern all EU member states. The EP also has the exclusive power to approve the EU budget and to scrutinize the work of the European Commission, the EU's executive body.

Additionally, the EP acts as a forum for political debate and debate. It debates key issues affecting the EU and holds the Commission and Council accountable through questions and resolutions.

Composition

The EP is composed of 705 members, known as Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). MEPs are directly elected by voters in every five years in all EU member states.
