Matt Ryan Retires from NFL After 14 Seasons

Former Falcons Quarterback Signs One-Day Contract to End Career

Ryan Leaves Atlanta as Team's All-Time Leader in Passing Yards and Touchdowns

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, signing a one-day contract with the team to officially end his 14-year career. The 37-year-old Ryan, who spent 14 seasons in Atlanta, is the team's all-time leader in passing yards (59,735) and touchdowns (377).

Ryan signed a six-year, $67.5 million contract with the Falcons in 2018, including a $7.45 million signing bonus and $34.75 million guaranteed. In 2020, Ryan had a cap number of $18.96 million, with a base salary of just $10.5 million. The remaining $17.91 million was in signing bonus prorations and roster bonuses.

Ryan's 2018 extension made him the first NFL player to reach the $30 million per year mark. He was also named the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 2016, when he led the Falcons to Super Bowl LI.

In addition to his success on the field, Ryan was also known for his leadership and professionalism off the field. He was named the Falcons' Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019 for his work in the community.

Ryan's retirement marks the end of an era for the Falcons. He was the face of the franchise for over a decade and helped lead the team to some of its most successful seasons in history. Ryan will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Falcons history.
